Discussion & Limitations in your Thesis
The discussion is an essential part of your thesis, where you interpret and evaluate your results. It is equally important to openly present the limitations of your research.
Important Aspects of the Discussion
In the discussion, the results obtained are interpreted in detail and placed in the current research context. While the conclusion provides a concise summary, the discussion should delve deeper into the meaning of the results. It is advisable to structure the discussion as follows:
- Summarize Results: Start with a brief overview of your most important results in relation to your research question.
- Interpretation: Explain the results and explain how they might have come about.
- Comparison with Other Studies: Relate your results to other research findings and highlight differences or similarities.
- Limitations: Discuss the weaknesses and limitations of your investigation.
Summary of Results
At the beginning of the discussion, you should present a brief summary of your most important results. This is not about a renewed detailed description, but about a concise overview of the results that are directly related to the research question.
Example: In a thesis that examined the influence of social media on the consumer behavior of young people, it was found that 80% of respondents stated that they made purchasing decisions based on influencer recommendations. In addition, it was found that the Instagram platform had the greatest influence on purchasing behavior.
Interpretation of Results
In this part of the discussion, you interpret the results and put them in the context of your research question. Show to what extent the results met your expectations and what factors may have contributed to the observed results. Also analyze why some results may differ from the hypotheses.
Example: The results of the study on the influence of social media on the consumer behavior of young people show that influencer marketing plays a significant role. This supports existing research that identifies social media as an important factor for purchasing decisions. Surprisingly, however, traditional advertising in print media still has a strong influence on 15% of respondents, which indicates a previously little-noticed coexistence of old and new media in the target group.
Limitations of the Research
Every research work has its limitations, which you should make transparent in the discussion. It is not about criticizing the entire work, but about objectively pointing out the restrictions that could influence the interpretation and generalization of your results. Limitations can arise from the methodology, the samples or external factors.
- Sample Size: A too small sample size could limit the generalizability of the results.
- Methodological limitations: The chosen method (e.g. online surveys) may not have captured certain aspects.
- Temporal or geographical limitations: Your investigation may have been limited to a specific time period or region.
Example: A central limitation of this thesis was the restriction of the sample to adolescents in urban areas. This makes it difficult to transfer the results to rural regions or other age groups. In addition, the survey was conducted exclusively online, which may have resulted in an underrepresentation of adolescents with lower internet affinity.
Recommendations for further research
To conclude the discussion, you can make concrete suggestions for further research. These should build on the limitations of your own work and show which questions remained open or which aspects could be explored in more depth in future studies. Avoid general statements and instead give precise recommendations.
Example: Future research could focus on examining the social media influence in rural areas to identify possible differences to urban areas. In addition, it would be useful to conduct a long-term study to investigate the sustainability of influencer-induced purchasing decisions.
