Discussion & Limitations in your Master's Thesis
In the discussion of your master's thesis, the results of your research are interpreted and classified in a scientific context. At the same time, you describe the limits of your investigation and show how these could influence the results.
Structure of the discussion
The discussion section is an essential part of your Master's thesis. Here you analyze the meaning of your results, relate them to existing research results and address possible weaknesses of your investigation. Unlike in the conclusion, where you only give a summary, you go into the discussion in depth and analyze your results in detail.
- Summary of key findings : Brief presentation of the most important results of your investigation.
- Interpretation of results : What do your findings mean in the context of your research question and the existing scientific discourse?
- Connection to the literature : Classification of the results in the theoretical framework and comparison with other studies.
- Analysis of limitations : Describe the weaknesses of your research and their potential impact on the results.
Summary of the most important results
At the beginning of the discussion, briefly summarize the crucial results of your research. This short summary should directly refer to your central research question and clearly highlight the relevant results. Use this section to reintroduce your readers to the topic without going into detail.
Example : In a master's thesis examining work motivation in remote teams, it was found that flexible working hours and clear communication significantly increase productivity. This underscores the growing importance of flexible working models in a globally networked working world.
Interpretation of the results
The interpretation follows the summary. Here you analyze why your results turned out the way they did and what conclusions can be drawn from them. It is important to place your results in the context of the theoretical foundations that you used in your literature review and to highlight how they provide new insights or confirm or refute existing theories.
Example : The results of this study confirm the theory that flexibility in the workplace is a crucial factor for work motivation, as already suggested by Smith (2018). However, it shows that the influence of communication in virtual teams is significantly greater than in previous studies, which is due to the increased use of digital tools during the pandemic.
Limitations of the research
No research project is without limitations. In this section of the discussion, you address the limitations that you encountered during your investigation and explain how they might have affected your results. It is important to transparently present the weaknesses of your work without undermining the value of your research.
- Sampling restrictions: A small or non-representative sample could affect the generalizability of your results.
- Methodological limitations: Possibly certain methods did not capture all facets of the subject of investigation.
- Time limitations: If the research was limited to a short period of time, this could affect the significance of your results.
Example : A significant limitation of this study lies in the relatively small sample, which consisted primarily of employees from a single company. This could make it difficult to generalize the results to other companies. In addition, the survey period was limited to only six months, which may not have adequately taken into account seasonal fluctuations in work behavior.
Recommendations for further research
At the end of the discussion, you can make suggestions for further research. These recommendations should be based on the limitations of your work and show how future studies can deepen the findings of your master's thesis or apply them to broader contexts.
Example : Future research could use a larger sample across multiple industries to examine the generalizability of the results. It would also be useful to conduct the study over a longer period of time in order to capture possible changes in work motivation over the year.
